Architecture and planning always happens in dialogue, one could say. But why is it then that the ideal that is promoted in architectural schools and publications still is about design in monologue? In a time where transformation needs to happen within existing buildings and environments, which have already been designed, the hidden reality of designing dialogue becomes a fact. This new condition is not without consequences. Design in Dialogue starts from a radical openness towards design, as a practice that creates new conditions and give others the possibility to add, remove or change its meaning. It acknowledges the position of conflict and complexity at the heart of the discipline. In this project we develop an understanding of the organisational and identical consequences of this demystifying attitude and try to reveal its hidden presence in a large diversity of architectural practices. We develop settings to make the role and consequences of dialogue explicit and productive.
