MASNAVICITY

Reinventing the poetics of an Iranian city

MASNAVICITY

Reinventing the poetics of an Iranian city
MASNAVI-CITY borrows its name from poetry, to examine re-establishing a by-gone form of living space in Yazd.

Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

MASNAVI-CITY deals with these changes in the context of the cities of Iran, specifically the city of YAZD. MASNAVI is an ever-changing form of storytelling in Persian poetry in which Interrelated stories stack on top of and grow from within each other. These do not begin at a certain point nor they end at one but do form a seamless complex. Cities are very much like MASNAVI; urban typology of living spaces and social structures are their two ever-changing elements. These two define the form of living spaces.
In Yazd, up until six decades ago multiple generations lived in one large courtyard house. Ever since social changes made this typology obsolete, desire independence from parents became the harbinger for younger generations to get attracted to apartment living. In apartments, they lost their private courtyard and their private sky. MASNAVI-CITY seeks to re-establish courtyard houses where everyone has a story to live, in a way that conforms to the contemporary social needs.
