Nonument is a research project that addresses hidden monuments and spaces that carry symbolic value in physical and virtual landscapes. The purpose of its art productions and research is to redefine the role of monuments. Nonument explores the possibilities of acknowledging the importance of public space from the bottom up rather than commemorating official histories. It attempts to redefine monuments as those spaces where collective social efforts and interactions occur. We see this as the first step in the creation of a re-defined monumentalism and a possible re-charging of public spaces. We use research methodologies and artistic interventions to ignite debates around the value of monuments, places and buildings carrying a symbolic value. Nonument project will be a growing collection of nonuments, a methodology to document and preserve them and digital archive to map collective urban landscapes.
