Mobile Quarantine

Dissolving Urban Realm into Moving Microcosms
An imaginary city investigating new ways of navigating public spaces in light of social distancing situations.

Type of project
  • Systemic changes

The pandemic has dissolved the public spaces as we knew. With our social connections maintained by the Internet and modern logistics, physical public space is atomized at all levels. While social distancing intensifies our longing for in-person contact, it also demonstrates a ‘contactless’ living is technically possible, with our personal space at center of the microcosms.

How would social distancing inspire a new kind of social gathering? Does separation unavoidably lead to isolation? Can we navigate public realm in a different manner? Is flexible connection possible in physical space as in virtual space?

Mobile Quarantine is a visionary city inspired by above questions. Residents live in cable cars and are carried to various locations according to scheduled time and route. Building blocks dissolves into living pods that converges and diverges, constituting moving particles of urban flow, as well as mediating between private zone and public places.
