We opened our architecture office studioeuropa in 2014. That's when we started to debate about streets as the most used and least taken care of public space. 2019 we pitched our idea of UTOSTADT to the city of Munich - open-ended. studioeuropa was founded 2014 by Julian Chiellino, Felix Reiner, Sophie Reiner more info: www.utostadt.info

UTOSTADT

More space. Less cars.

UTOSTADT

More space. Less cars.
UTOstadt is a step along the way to a car-free city, in which public space is no longer dominated by cars but opened to the public.

Big cities are bursting at the seams.
Private space is expensive and rare.

But there still is a lot of cheap space in best location.
It doesn’t have to be freed, bought or fought for.
It's here, undeveloped and cheap.

A residential parking permit in Munich costs 30€/year.
Being a resident and owning a motor vehicle are the only requirements for such a favourable extra room. 12sqm for €2.50/month!

Time for utopia: A car-free in mind we propose to open this extra space for people who walk/bike. It mustn’t be a privilege of car owners. In addition to cars, you can park ateliers, offices, bars or social infrastructure. An UTO needs the same footprint as a full size car. It’s a cheap additional room for work or entertainment available to residents. The use costs the same as a residential parking permit.

Parking UTOs is a step along the way to a car-free city, in which public space is no longer reserved for cars but opened to the public.

This step we want to bring forward.
