Health Care and Social Infrastructure: Architecture Practice & Planning

SPACE ANATOMY

Health Care and Social Infrastructure: Architecture Practice & Planning
Initiating a transdisciplinary diaglogue through research on innovations in health care infrastructures
File under
Type of project
  • New alliances

The recent health crisis prompt permanent transition in health and social services. In this context new health care infrastructures emerge. How and where they are planned, how they affect and shape institutions, cities, municipalities, and neighborhoods, raises broad debates. Them calling into question existing methodologies of architects and planners and giving impetus for entirely new infrastructures resulting directly out of local necessities.
SPACE ANATOMY’s impact on the development of architecture lies within its aim to bring emerging infrastructures in Austria to light and extend disciplinary debate on spatial expertise as a relevant part of shaping care typologies. This project develops new methodologies, initiates a digital platform and launches a book where local initiatives become showcases for answers to challenges of current health crisis, and enable contrasting local efforts with international positions in architecture, planning and beyond.

Context
Where is a care facility situated? How is it connected to the infrastructure?

Community
The community plays a central role in all kinds of care facilities - how is this community organised? How does the individual fit in? How can the practice and physical space support the development of a community?

Identification
What does someone need to feel at home? How can someone relate to his/her surroundings?

Utilisation
How is a care facility utilised? What freedom does it offer to the staff?

Local Identities
How can architectural elements connect to a local identity? How can this help to trigger memories? How is the threshold between private and public, indoor and outdoor and how sensitive is this transition of space organised?
