Rural Assembly


Rural Assembly is an initiative to develop new models of affordable and climate resilient housing, improving the social and built fabric of underserved rural farming communities through the application of community workshops, good design and building technology.

Rural Assembly focuses on bringing design research methodology from the city to rural areas to tackle housing issues. There is ample opportunity to improve and reinvest in the areas and people that help feed urban areas across the United States are Europe, but are too often forgotten. The project proposes quality, safe, and climate resilient housing accessible to farmworkers – with an architectural design driven by direct engagement with people in local communities. As a case study, Rural Assembly is focusing on the farming community of Immokalee, Florida.

Rural Assembly proposes an alternative route for developing affordable housing by forging partnerships with local non-profit organizations, and creating alliances so the design process is ingrained in the local community. The model of Rural Assembly is such that it can expand to other rural areas, and adapt to the climates and cultures of various sites.
