ON/OFF

Neukölln, Berlin, Germany
ON/OFF is a network of young architects, designers, curators, filmmakers and urbanists from different countries and cities. Our curiosity lies in the city and its processes. This complexity offers the basis for experiments into our contemporary condition and gives us the opportunity to question, to tune into new realities. The name ON/OFF plays on our changing structure of members and participants. The idea of being on or off allows for members to work at varying rates of productivity.

“Architecture can only survive as a form of critical culture, as a resistant otherness.” (Kenneth Frampton)
File under

We are not alone in our impatience with architecture. We are operating in a time of extreme frustrated talent; young designers are facing a choice between boredom and a diminishing respect of their qualifications, and so we see creative energy seeping into unexpected realms. We started self-initiated projects because "we got sick of waiting to be asked".

For instance, in 2014 we initiated a series of Conference Calls, to investigate the recent proliferation of architecture collectives worldwide. Whether as a response to economic crisis or a more radical desire for alternatives, many in creative fields have eschewed 9-to-5 office work in favor of more collaborative working environments. The Conference Calls are informal interviews, based on a set of questions that hope to reveal the impetus behind this turn. By questioning the nature of collective practices, the Conference Calls seek to expose what it is that drives and repels young artists, architects and designers today.

Rhombi House - a prototype for communal living

Conference Call - a research on the collective phenomena. In 2014 we begun a series of conversations held online with different collectives practicing in Europe.

Disco Späti - sometimes you have make a disco, stock up some beers and hustle the streets to make a buck

Kopf Kino - it takes it name from a German expression for the ‘cinema’ in ones mind as you try to imagine something. Our creation takes the elements of imagination and moving image and projects them out from the internal space of the mind and into the forum of the city.
