Critical Preservation

conscious approach towards future architectural production
A search for new understanding of materiality, in times of global crisis.

Type of project
  • New alliances

Critical preservation is meant as a design philosophy that allows many actions to follow. It underlines characteristics that should be met to produce more respectfully, both in the aspect of the meaning, as well as in the material-physical realm of architecture. It seeks to define a theoretical ground for observed tendencies in the architecture industry, where preservation is perceived as an active approach rather than a post-factum reaction to change.

It defines outlines for a conscious architectural production based on a complex understanding of authenticity and value, in relation to the user experience, passage of time and materiality. An approach that both consists of conscious material choices that will allow new buildings to age and last for a long time, as well as maintenance practices that will preserve the growing age-value and memory value of a building in its lifespan.
