A Concrete Paradise: Petrified Carpets

Material expression for an architecture of experience and joy

We foresee a potential opportunity in a Future Architecture where material expression enhances sensorial experience, in which beauty, color and playfulness lead to an architecture of joy. We explore architecture through material investigation, transposing concepts into artefacts. An example is Petrified Carpets, an historical and material research that translates elements found in Persian carpets into a series of concrete forms. Experimenting with different techniques of casting, coloring, and texturing concrete, these elements are translated into tactile concrete forms exposing the lively character of a material that has, in the building industries, progressively lost its expressive potential. The results are a series of Brutalist Toys that compose a semipavilion: a manifesto of a Future Architecture that engages with material expression, artistic production and craftmanship, illustrating narratives and framing rituals. Aspects that are often neglected in architecture discipline.
