Auld Lang Syne

Temporary monument to Brexit

Auld Lang Syne

Temporary monument to Brexit
The project is a temporary monument to mark Britain's exit from the European union.

Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

The project marks the British exit from the EU with the lighting of two beacons, one in Calais the other in Folkestone on the night of BREXIT, March 29th 2019.

The monument takes the form of a temporary scaffold tower which suspends a concrete plinth upon which bales of straw await to be ignited by a flaming arrow. The monument is envisaged as temporary, erected three weeks prior to the ignition date (BREXIT).

The project acts as a countdown, reminiscent of the Times Square ball drop on new years eve in New York City when all eyes are focused on a single point, awaiting change. The project hopes that as the bales burn onlookers either side of the channel will join and sing Auld Lang Syne.

Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne?
