Thomas Pausz is an artist and designer based in Reykjavik. Thomas´s projects are multimedia scenarios for alternative ecologies. His installations and interventions in living systems create empathy with non-human forms of life such as pioneer plants, symbiotic corals, solitary bees or imaginary species. His narrative projects de-centre the human gaze and offer alternative sensory experiences of the environment.

  • New alliances

Non Flowers for a Hover Fly is an ongoing interdisciplinary project led by Thomas Pausz in collaboration with biologist Shannon Olsson. The idea involves a new experimental design method based on an observation of insect pollination to design virtual ´boundary´ objects (Non Flowers) that will interact with the insects. The positive impact of the project is to improve our understanding of pollinators´ perception, and to imagine a new way of designing the environment based on empathy with other species. Non Flowers belong to the emerging field of interspecies design, where the environment is designed for non humans species. The project extends the pioneering ideas of bio-semiotics and research on Animal Architecture, and uses new technologies to create a new typology of forms based interspecies care.
