One of the main problems with the infrastructures of today’s cities is the increase of the impermeable surfaces due to excessive urbanization and concretion. Since the natural water cycle relies on soil absorbing the rain water and let it turn into fresh water in a slow, long process, the urban fabric is coated with impermeable surfaces, the water system makes shortcuts and water is lost via evaporating or pollution. Therefore, gaining the rainwater back into the cycle or collecting and using it become crucial. While improving the infrastructures in the urban environment, this approach also provides a vital contribution to social life in cities: Public life enhances as the green and water infrastructures are improved. We implemented this approach on an urban design project in the district of Kadıköy, Istanbul: Istanbul is one of the metropolitans facing severe problems like floods caused by extreme urbanization.
