Confinement Metrics

on the idealisation of space

Confinement Metrics

on the idealisation of space
Covid 19 and the idealisation of social distance changed our perception of space - probably not for the first time in history.

  • Site-specific cases

Pandemic crisis have tore people away from public spaces. In the mean time, confined spaces have become more and more important, thus leading to the development of architectural typologies. Cloisters in monastic buildings are a fine example, with architectural proportions and natural elements to create the Paradisus claustrali, an enclosed earthly paradise. Today, in prodominantely secular societies, spaces are being idealised for the feeling of safety and cleanliness. It wouldn't be difficult to imagine 2-meter grids so as to respect the 2-meter social distancing anywhere.

Painting 2-meter grids to outdoor cloister gardens and following the façade metrics is a tribute to space idealisation over the centuries. The grids on the pavement raise new questions about our perception of space after coronavirus.
