urban topographies

unregulated playgrounds

urban topographies

unregulated playgrounds
Deformation of the pavements to create topographies which encourage children to play.

Type of project
  • Systemic changes

This is a small extension of a larger project of urban landscape in the surrounding of Born Market, in Barcelona. Neighbors asked for playground areas, because there are very few in this dense area of the city.
The project is a deformation of the floor plane, the pavement, to create somehow a playful infrastructure integrated to the whole space. An unexpected and suggestive topography.
This strategy solves something that concerns us, which is the excess of regulations and safety prevention in the design of children areas, which drives the designs to excessively conventional configurations, and to fenced perimeters that we dislike. Fenced playgrounds are perceived like bubbles of security, but also create a distance between children and parents. They are specialized spaces inside the public space, with a single use, so a reduction of the common during the most of the time, when children are not in the streets.
