Artificial Islands in the Capitalocene

Two design proposals for new modes of urbanization

Artificial Islands in the Capitalocene

Two design proposals for new modes of urbanization
New modes of urbanization that produces its own grounds and urban-scale interiority.
File under
Type of project
  • Systemic changes

The Ground is the constant reference plane that negotiates conflicts: Public x Private, Mass x Void... Recent development in economics and politics are producing new kinds of Figure x Ground diagram, as can be perceived in Hong Kong and Singapore. The city does not relate to the ground anymore and is basically a mass with urban-scale interiority.
My work looks for new modes of urbanization when the city produces its own ground in the ocean. One case is the creation of land by China to claim for jurisdiction of the Chinese Sea. The interior is composed of samples of famous 20th century buildings.
My second project here looks at the Great Atlantic Garbage Vortex and samples spherical projects from the history of Architecture to create a nation in an artificial island that is not being claimed by anyone.
In the Capitalocene, the absolute form-finding algorithm is Capital. And it expanded to cover not only land, but also the ocean through cities that creates its own grounds.
