Reimagining Civic Plazas & Monuments for the Age of Environmentalism

Oil Palm Pedestal

Reimagining Civic Plazas & Monuments for the Age of Environmentalism
Oil Palm Pedestal seeks to address our social need for civic spaces that inspire environmentalism.

Oil Palm Pedestal is the first in a series of works to address society's need for spaces that reflect our ambition towards a cleaner, safer, and more just environment. Examining existing classical themes in the service of anthropocentrism, Studio Hai reappropriates those themes by cleverly adorning a Corinthian column with nature. Successfully enhancing the celebrity of nature instead of man.

By telling the story of Elaeis guineensis, Studio Hai makes understood the widespread industrial use of this plant to reveal both its practical and cultural influence in society: the wealth created, the destruction wrought, and the oil palm industry's influence in our daily lives.

In the future, Studio Hai imagines public spaces that have addressed society's tired approach of endless growth and glorification of man. Instead, with this project and similar others, they aim to foster conversations towards a more just, robust, and eco-centric future that serves all living things.
