Otherness Device

Collective artistic device to share inexplicable knowledge
Presenting art as “a way of thinking”, using empty spaces around institutions and language as a medium.

This is an invitation to resonate with the art of the word. Create an internal device to train ourselves to capture such resonances in all their complexities and challenge the current approaches to learning. Once detached of the persistent belief system dulling our mind, one could refine that awareness of resonance, being immersed in that intimate moment with a piece of language, being a word or a chunk of text. Sharing such experiences with others, it is suggested as the final purpose. The book will act as a medium, but the tangible structure that the book offers must be broken first. Once we identify the piece of text that resonates with us, it is cut from the book. After that exercise, we post a photo of our very own piece into social networks. Scraps will be collated to later be exhibited in cultural centers filling up empty spaces around different institutions. The collective artistic device will have a feed of fresh “inexplicable knowledge” of others.

Transform our perceived “reality” taking it out of the hegemonic project that prevails in our society. I invite others to activate this new artistic device to challenge the tendency to learn through restrained ways used in traditional educational settings. And to allow people to break free from prescriptive approaches to learning and create their own, using art and language as a medium.

Empty space: Is the space that the institutions make available for the project. A “canvas” to project the pieces of language on public walls, or in a room, or a side or a façade of a building (the last would be ideal). It can be an ephemeral or a fixed installation, but the contents will be changing with a new feeding each week. This will create a cornucopia of feelings in the spectator, allowing a fresh and unexpected flow of ideas in the mind of the reader.

This first otherness device proposes to people to break the material structure of the book as a tradicional communication tool. And let themselves dwell in the fragments of text that “talk to them”. Then, make these fragments their own, by cutting and freeing them in social media. The act of physically cutting the book and experiencing the discomfort of the decision, the pain of the transgression, will add to the experience of ownership.

Inviting a group of people to perform. The exercise will allow a new path to freedom of expression under a new personal structure to add to a collective frame in display. A vehicle to let the unconscious mind to dare and florish. The authentic passion for knowledge, challenges established methods.

Everyone is invited to this project. All pieces of language will be added to the “nest” or empty space, creating at the same time a collective archive/database of these fragments. People are encouranged to create new texts using a collection of selected pieces from others as well (or not) to their own fragments. These new deliveries to the project will be projected and published.
