Contextualization by systemic localization
Conceiving 21st century mass-localization to create the participatory transport hub of tomorrow.

  • Systemic changes

In the 20th century UK, train stations have been extensively built within the framework of prefabrication. This oftentimes resulted in the replication of a particular specimen of building numerous times, regardless of the economical, social or cultural context it was placed in.

Instead of using similarly centralized methods which largely predetermined outcomes, we propose a design system allowing for infrastructure nodes to become incubators of local development. Based on new fabrication methods, such as additive manufacturing and CNC, we bring together contextual particularity, whilst still benefiting from the principles of prefabrication. We call this “mass-localization”. It allows for a new generation of stations which are parametrized to enable local financial participation with smart contracting, space programming suited for local economy and initiatives, smaller producers to bid for parts of the procurement and design particularization by citizens participation.

A systemic approach for suited intervention (1) Programmation - Cross budgeting as financial optimization while fostering programmatic synergies / (2) Conception - A new vernacular through parametric design, the benefits of local adaption and people’s involvement / (3) Realization - Fabrication with local raw materials reduces environmental impacts and creates a locally made built structures

Rather than an end in itself, innovative technologies are used to connect communities to the building of their environment, to fulfil the cultural and physical local integration.

With the development of parametric models and innovative construction methods, we can truly conceive the mobility hub of today and tomorrow. Layer after layer, a mobile micro-factory on rails will build an object truly involved in its conception.

A station made-in “your place”. As a place you go to and not only go through. As a place that takes an active role in the development of your local economy. As a place where we meet our neighbours. A place that also belongs to you.
