The disappeared valley
The disappeared valley
- Site-specific cases
At the beginning of the last century „il Cadore“ was planned to become a central alpine location. In order to create a future perspective large development have been initiated to overcome the topographical circumstances. Yet, in 1963 this euphoria came to an immediate end, due to a huge mountain slide, which was caused by the construction of the Vajont reservoir and buried the canyon, thousands of lives and the hope for the future.
The project approaches this area, taking into account the present situation: destroyed, unfinished or deteriorated, it is what there is: fragments in the landscape. Exactly this imperfection creates interest and fascination. After a wider view on the whole area and their history, the focus goes down to the Vajont Valley. As a Keyplace of history, the site needs a new accessibility, metaphorically but also physically. Carefully placed interventions try to reconcile the area with its past, in order to create inspiration, on the site where everything stopped.
