Gyaan Ashray
Gyaan Ashray
- Systemic changes
Behrampura is a neighborhood located in south-eastern Ahmedabad (India), housing a very pro-active Valmiki community. For quite some time now, women have been gathering every evening in one of the neighborhood terraces to teach themselves reading, writing and arithmetic skills. The ‘Gyaan Ashray’ (Hindi for Knowledge Shelter) was proposed as a way to support this initiative through the means of light infrastructure: a public architectural device constructed with minimum resources and energy, while maximizing socio-political impacts. The aim was set on potentializing educational, political, and cultural networks, while its development functioned as a pedagogical experience. Therefore, by building this pop-up classroom with the women, children and the leaders of the community, we located it as an activist appointment that pursued academic developments with direct incidence in real life circumstances.
