The Atmosphere of Spaces

“There is a knowledge of place which is reducible to a sort of co-existence with that place, and which is not simply nothing, even though it cannot be conveyed by a description.” Maurice Merleau-Ponty
File under

By definition atmosphere is always what the individual objects that occupy places are not. With this knowledge we are able to focus some of our attention on learning how to create spaces that have a distinct quality to them. The quality that has been forgotten. We live in a mass media society and we are in a desperate need of spaces where we are able to connect with basic principles and focus on a more inspiring and productive way of thinking. Architecture has all the means to do so. By creating spaces with a heterotopia quality we would be able to provide the society with places that encourage thought and help us develop. The means to embody these principles are very rudimentary, but we often lose sight of them as they are not pragmatic but more poetic. Light, air, materials and sound.
