A proposed circular raised path, centered on the castle keep, offers closer views to the riparian vegetation, linking the islet and both sides of the river. This loop conveys a sense of unity, to protect cultural and natural heritage in a place that is changing at the pace of global warming. The last few decades might have brought more environmental changes than the previous eight centuries.

The construction of Almourol begun in 1171, ordered by the Knight Templar Gualdim Pais. Thereafter, the castle would protect a small, although strategically important islet on the river Tagus. The site is known for scenic natural beauty, wich is under threat with climate change, the reduction of the river flow, poor water quality and loss of biodiversity. In the future, the fate of the river will only change if people are aware - that is where architecture and placemaking can make a difference.
