Architecture and/or Sculpture

The Ambiguity of Function

Architecture and/or Sculpture

The Ambiguity of Function
The difference between Architecture and Sculpture is whether there is furniture.

Function appears to be the fundamental division between Architecture and Sculpture: a utilitarian purpose that informs and justifies one discipline and is purposely absent in the other. Yet, the assessment of function itself can be dubious, as it seems to depend directly on how one chooses to appropriate a certain space. If such is the case, any architectural building can be appreciated as a sculpture if experienced singularly due to it´s spatial attributes - shifting from container to content - the same way any large sculpture can became architectural if a specific function is then found to suit it´s forms - shifting from content to container.

Such ambiguity was the premise behind the placement of 3 yellow objects inside a white box. Alone, they might resemble a contemporary sculptural arrangement in a gallery room. However, their scale and position might indicate the possibility of a domestic use, like pieces of furniture that organize the different areas of a wall-less apartment.
