Studio Genua is a collective of young architects based in Berlin (est. 2015). Sharing a strong interest in creating credible places, we have up to date worked on a wide range of projects - from medium sized industrial buildings and small scale renovations, to stage design and exhibitions. Besides commissioned work, we are enthusiastic about realizing our own ideas, forming an audience and collaborating with other people.

Pool Potentials

an Atlas of Seasonal Voids, a Toolkit for Activation

Pool Potentials

an Atlas of Seasonal Voids, a Toolkit for Activation
A case study diving deep into the seasonality of public open-air pools, opening a space for discussion and speculative projections of future public services.
File under
Type of project
  • New alliances

Open-air swimming pools attract diversity: they bring together people from various social, cultural and generational backgrounds. Given such potential to spark encounter, it is striking that these diverse spaces remain closed for a significant part of the year (approx. 8,7 months for all 10 Sommerbäder in Berlin between 2016-2018). All the more, as most of these seasonal voids are located either in the very center of dense urban areas or are at least easily accessible by public transport. Pool Potentials is first and foremost a comprehensive research on these spaces. It takes account of three levels of spatial analysis, but also reflects upon public and political discourses around open-air pools. In a further step - and based on interviews with organizers and activists from different self-initiated urban projects in Berlin - Pool Potentials outlines different strategies on idea placement, campaigning and implementation that shall serve as a toolkit for future activators of urban voids.
