  • Systemic changes

In the Arctic mining has acquired an importance beyond resource extraction. This is evident in the Svalbard Free Zone, where mining has become a means to establish political influence in the region.

Moreover, as mining waste threatens the ecosystem and the livelihood of Arctic communities, the Embassy aims to give waste a new political character. Given its potential reuse and properties, mining waste management becomes an opportunity for communities in Svalbard to counterbalance both its environmental effects and the political tensions amongst nations.

With waste as a resource, the recycled product is the physical manifestation of the politics of waste, a result of Arctic cooperation and local craftsmanship. Thus, acquiring an ethical character beyond architecture, but that of an ambassador, veiling for the best interests of the communities and of the region; sustainability, political stability and self sufficiency.
