Dialogues with Places

A reflection on public space based on a contemplative practice and environmental urgency.

I aim to bring attention to how our emotions play a role in how we analyse and create public spaces, given the complexity of elements that define our perception. This introduces the scarcely studied aspect of affect in the urban studies equation, through the dialogue between the consciousness of our emotions and our intellect’s reasoning. Our perceptions are both highly individual and subjective, and collective phenomena. I highlight both aspects through my own personal narrative of public places with a genius loci, threatened by the overconsumption of space.

Intangible forces define our perception of spaces mediating nature and urban developments; our sensory experiences are highly complex and correlate with natural attributes, landscape integration and sensible design practices. By deepening our understanding of these mechanisms, we can design these vulnerable areas preserving their poetic attributes while regenerating nature. The full essay can be found at my website.

Together with this essay, two series of paintings illustrate the main themes, literally synthesising in one hand the need of reflection and on the other, of action. UNDENIABLE is a series about seeds. This is inspired by seed bombs, used to replant derelict lands and connects to the beginnings of the guerrilla gardening movement. It aims to bring attention to the imperious need for climate action, collectively and individually. These sketches are performed with my non-dominant hand.

RAW is a series that depicts the emotional landscapes of each chapter by simplified versions of contour lines. This topography of the interior is painted with my dominant hand.
