Tactical urbanism prototype of how ''cultural city qaurter'' could redevelop old gunpowder factory in Kamnik, Slovenia.
File under
Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

The project was built in former gunpowder factory as a prototype of how old factory can become attractive. Initiative was of great heritage importance, since area was already demolished in previous years by various owners. None of them had any respect to old buildings, protected landscape and technological infrastructure. Prototype of Cultural quarter Barutana (CQB) was set up in former smithy. The idea was to penetrate security wall, to establish a festival stage and artist exhibition inside the old building from 1854.
It was a great example of how a bottom up action of architects reflected on municipality. After just a few months, municipality bought part of the area to further develop CQB.
Project is seen as a statement where architects are starting with democratic dialog. A future architect is not someone who contradicts other disciplines in order to fulfill his own dreams but is catalyst that brings different professions, general public and authorities together.
