Living Alone
Living Alone
- Systemic changes
In Europe, people who live alone have more than doubled since the 1980s. The greatest increase in people living alone took place especially in large urban centers, where being able to live alone is also a symbol of emancipation, social progress and care. Being able to live alone is today a sign of social advancement, which encompasses numerous gender and class struggles, as well as responds to numerous needs not contemplated in the traditional family model. Living alone is a choice that attract many people nowadays and that would meet the needs of an ever-growing part of European citizens. But it is too often victim of unregulated market speculations that make living alone economically unsustainable and highly precarious. By choice or coincidence, living alone is a contemporary lifestyle that claims attention and worthy housing solutions, economic subsidies and new forms of care.
