Context Collaborative

Brooklyn, NY, United States of America
A pseudo practice. Never here, always there. Optimistic, yet critical. Inconclusively, Context is a design and research collaborative that explores platforms and prototypes at various scales. Urbanisms, landscapes, architectures, and objects become mediums through which possible realities are uncovered.

GHOST SPACE

Making Tangible the Infrastructures of Platform Capitalism
Three proposals for interfaces between digital platforms and physical spaces to foster human autonomy
File under
Type of project
  • Systemic changes

Under platform capitalism, architecture is a minor physical component amongst countless materials and digital objects that manage the global economy. These platforms constitute the back end to architecture, with technologies like BIM and the front end, where internet services such as wayfinding and delivery apps are the interfaces through which users engage with architecture itself.

This project speculates on this integration of architecture into the platform economy via 3 proposals for an emergent typology of “ghost space”; physical spaces whose public engagement is contained within digital platforms. This typology’s place as a corporeal lynchpin in a largely immaterial economy offers an alternative to the post-political call for architects to design governing platforms themselves. Instead, this project views the sites of labor and conviviality latent in ghost spaces as opportunities to design in support with others who work in the platform economy.
