Tall Tales Company creates visual circus performances in which object manipulation and acrobatics are used to tell stories. Tall Tales was founded in 2012 by Harm van der Laan and Maartje Bonarius. Their collaboration originated at the circus school Codarts Rotterdam where they specialized themselves in aerial works, object manipulation, and partner acrobatics. Square Two (2020) is a site specific performance in which juggling patterns, visual art merge and building architecture merge.

Transforming & renewing the vision of spaces with juggling acts

Square Two

Transforming & renewing the vision of spaces with juggling acts
Three jugglers and the audience follow a trail through a distinctive building, neighbourhood or unusual location, transforming and renewing the vision of spaces, and where the physical and numerical world coalesce to become one.

Square Two is an artistic experiment at the intersection of circus and visual arts. Square Two focuses on the paradigms of social aesthetics and substitutes formal criteria of spatiality with the concept of architecture as a process. Spaces are transformed by the contextualisation of the actors. The spaces they inhabit become hybrid spaces. Actors function as avatars of the audience. By juggling, they are following codes, or algorithms. The dehumanisation of the artist within this concept is part of the performance’s strategy; it stresses the formal aesthetics and concepts of the space. The transformation of the space by the playful juggling act of carrying the reference of spectacle and circus challenges the concept of imposed functionality. We see a future where reshaping architecture in itself will create a future of architecture. Let’s start by re-contextualizing the context; the radicalism of this act will create new horizons.
