Meteorological square

A prototypical project of public space in climate changing urban environments

Meteorological square

A prototypical project of public space in climate changing urban environments
A pilot project of experimental meteorological square. The case of Piazza 2 Giugno in Valenzano
File under
Type of project
  • Systemic changes

Piazza 2 Giugno was re-designed as the prototype for a repeatable “infrastructure for living” dedicated to defend urban publicness in extreme climatic and social conditions.
The device is a linear, suspended structure composed by two concentric curved metal pipes, going through the whole space and providing different kinds of services to three areas designed specifically to host different atmospheres and functions (a playground for kids, a relax area and a kiosk). The infrastructure provides: 1) Lighting and Shadowing to allow a safe use of space 24h a day; 2) Heating and Cooling device to mitigate conditions in climate changing urban spaces (therefore providing an archetype for extreme environmental conditions); 3) Energy production and supply, 4) Hotspots to freely access informations; 5) Extra: a shared soundscape. Anyone can upload short audio files into the structure to be played once, and thus create a performative, unpredictable public dialogue among the citizens.

Upper plan of the square, where the three functional areas are clearly visible in their relation between permeable and impermeable soil:
- playground area for children with also facilities for beginning skaters and bikers and the widest impermeabilization of the ground and percentage of empty space;
- relax area to contemplate and just stay together, with the lowest impermeabilization, to enjoy the grass;
- small kiosk with fixed tables and stools with half-way impermeable ground.

Exploded axonometry of the funcioning of the infrastructure, hosting 7 different devices altering the climatic and interactive condition of the square.

Two cross sections. Left: the kiosk area. Right: the solar panels above the relax area.

Seven diagrams of the structure hosting as many devices. Clocwise from top left: Energy production; Summer Cooling; Winter infrared warming; Shadowing; Lighting; Wifi access; Extra shared soundscape.

Eye view of the area. Construction beginning expected fall 2020.
