Apellou 5 : A vertical Public Space

A three dimensional enclave of activity in Thessaloniki

Apellou 5 : A vertical Public Space

A three dimensional enclave of activity in Thessaloniki
Vertical public spaces as a response to the contemporary problematic of urban design / an attempt to overcome the already saturated public space
File under

Regarding the already saturated urban fabric of European cities, there is a demand for new forms of public space in terms of both architectural design and social interaction. This idea literally invents a new public space developed vertically rather than reconfiguring an existing one. It articulates a multiplicity of spatial qualities that support the emergent diversity of urban actions and encourages new social interactions in a vertical congestion. At the same time construction itself becomes a statement of architectural manifestation, a provocative urban form in terms of integration into the urban landscape, and a container of extraordinary urban experience. Thus transforming the context (urban forms and subjects) into a place where “otherness” potentiality may emerge, the construction becomes a “three dimensional enclave of activity”. The conceptualization of the project serves a new approach for future urban design developments that answers to the problematic of the public space.
