Into Desuetude
Into Desuetude
Recent architectural discussion mostly deals with questions of adjustment, use and solving the urging problems of mankind. We propose a new vision for architecture in the future:
While the world is in constant transformation, so are the domains of signification.
The general idea for a useful thing is that it has a prevailing consistent concept and is produced and used adequately. But what happens when a useful thing’s lifecycle ends? Either it gets disposed, (no matter what is it’s material value or cost of production) or it shifts into being valued in a new category. Despite its DESUETUDE.
What could be adequate to a society of permanent adaptive transformation?
Single use, multiple use, permanently shifting use, desuetude.
Architecture to please?
All of the above, of course.
As the deceased, reappearing, maybe imaginary wife of the Piotr P. in Soderbergh’s SOLARIS puts it: „We don’t have to think like that anymore.“
