Architecture and Heritage: Re-inhabiting the rural territory
A 'guide' to new human settlements through the reinterpretation of Spanish abandoned villages
File under
Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

As a consequence of the current pandemic situation and the teleworking possibilities that seem to be here to stay, people are moving to their vacation homes or family homes.
Being able to take advantage of the city's professional opportunities, and at the same time enjoy the natural environment could transform the way we occupy the Spanish territory.
In this context, the abandoned or nearly abandoned villages in the rural area become a potential location for new settlements that make this new way of living possible.

This idea aims to understand these 'new' locations and work to adapt them to our contemporary needs and dynamics: Building these places shouldn't be about ignoring them and occupying new territory, but about understanding them, reinterpret them and build on the already built.
How can we adapt the obsolete? How can we live with heritage? And how can we re-think our needs through architecture in the rural area?

1. Recognise the value of the abandoned or nearly abandoned village

2. Identify the particular 'scenes' in the village and assign them a role in the new settlement

3. Topography - The importance of perception and connections to build each scene in relation to the others

4. Housing - An example of a scene construction by building homes around ruins

5. Each village is a storyboard to be read
