superspace founded in 2014 istanbul, is a practice that is interested in ‘simple but complex’ relations of human, architecture, and city, where architecture plays a mediatory role in-between and is subject to represent an intuitive ‘research and generate’ paradigm. superspace interested in the urban fabric, representation, and boundaries of space, envisioning within the design and management process of mediating public space and human interface, creating an invisible network of the territory.

solarCLOUD

an event place reconnecting humans with elemental planetary sources of energy

solarCLOUD

an event place reconnecting humans with elemental planetary sources of energy
a network of kinetic solar balloons, spread around the world, supported with IoT technology that encourages interactive real-time collective art and supplies renewable energy through local micro-grids
File under
Type of project
  • New alliances

as technology gets more user-friendly and accessible, clean energy production will be a part of our daily routines of urban life. It will not be an issue to produce electricity in the middle of the city and share it among its nearby users. It will not be produced in relatively big industrial buildings using fossil fuels but in the open air using renewable sources. It will not be in one place but all over the city. It will be seen in the action and it will be playful. As we are being the consumers, we will also be part of creating something together and feel the community real-time.

spread to the city in a convenient macro grid of disguised open spaces, that are suspended with fun to stroll among balloons, solarCLOUD is an answer to reducing our environmental footprint and increasing ecologic, social and economic sustainability of its surroundings, functioning as invisible solar power plants while performing basis for interactive collective art that fosters public spaces for all.

during the day: kinetic 3d shadow sculpture
solarCLOUD is a LandArt object, which consists of a group of solar balloons woven with solar fabric, that creates a shaded park in the daytime; tracking and harvesting solar energy with the daily movements of the sun, instinctively behaves as a kinetic sculpture and settles down at night providing a basis for mesmerizing digital real-time light art shows simultaneously designed by generative artists as well as its users.

at night: hyper-digital 2d light sculpture
while the cloud is hunting sun at daytime and shading for the podium, nighttime balloons descend to a specified height, after losing their heat energy inside, and becoming individual ‘pixels’ of a balloon ‘media cloud’

a mesmerizing art show during the “it’s lit!” festival
solartcloud is a programmable digital platform, which would become an open-air ‘new media museum’ that host many artists all over the world, scheduled for a ‘changing and refreshing content’ monthly, weekly and daily programs from different artists and daily users.

conceptual section
as the solar balloons rise and fall with the circadian rhythm of the earth like a sunflower, they produce 70 times as much electricity as they consume daily and supply renewable energy to its neighboring buildings and equipment through a local micro-grid.

collective ephemeral art
in this era of internet and digitally enhanced IoT technologies, a community fosters not only in actual spaces but also in virtual ones, and sometimes more than easily. this place could serve as an interface for both, even living a double simultaneous life of dark and light in the realms of cyberspace and the city at the same time. new technologies can be promoted. Mixed reality applications could also be of service in special events or festivals.
