Public Programming: City Similies is a live performance series pairing contemporary architects and artists with archives of open-source image, audio, and video databases of architecture in their hometown. Through live video samples and audio remixes, each multimedia interactive live event exists somewhere between a screening, a performance, and an architectural archive. Assembled from public domain sources, private home movies, screen captures from satellites, and other invented forms of cartography, the new format constructs a layered mediascape of city stories, myths, and memories, and reveals reciprocal relationships between preservation and representation in the cultural commons and urban sphere. Held at multiple locations and programmed from across diverse genres, Public Programming: City Similies brings together audiences and producers, encouraging an exploration and understanding of architecture’s expanded context on-screen and on-site.
