“UN-Office”is an unofficial, unlicensed and unprofitable group of architects, urban designers & artists. “An” and “Un-” is not only a pun but also conveys our focus on duality, contradiction, complication and ambiguity in architecture, art, urban and humanity. We’re fascinated by the uncertainty of post-modernity and post-capitalist society and obsessed by the network where various territories and hierarchies are converged.

RIPPLING IRIDESCENCE

Robotic Fabrication - New skin learning from butterfly
Biosynthetic Fabrication, Digital Handcraft & Weird Tectonics that can respond to different light environment as a new intellegent facade system.

With the advent of computational design and digital fabrication technologies, architects seek ways to establish a novel system. Biosynthetic design strategy aims to reveal new intentionality and methodology to architecture. Deriving from the study of butterfly wing, we are fascinated by the kaleidoscopic iridescent effects that originate from a regular microscale structure and translucent material. The team tests materials that integrate with Dichroic Film and proceeds with hacking the Makerbot 3D printing system with 6 axes robotic arm to achieve an optimized 4D printing technology.

Varying in densities, orientations, and curvatures, and corresponding to photonic conditions, the rippling iridescent system offers a dynamic flowing pattern that corresponds to different climates and time. Not only bridging a connection among scales physically and photonically, it establishes an interactive relationship between people and the surrounding environment.

We use pseudo-code and script to generate and simulate the photonic structure of butterfly wings.

The ridge and cross-bracing translucent structure and respond to different light conditions. This can be applied to a new shading system.

The robotic fabrication system and end-effector design.

We combine UV resin with Dichroic Film to create kaleidoscopic iridescent effects.

Fabrication process with Makerbot 3D printing system with 6 axis robotic arm to achieve an optimized 4D printing technology.
