Non Architecture is a non-profit organisation, striving for innovation and experimentation by engaging an international community of young designers (1000+ projects, 2600+ participants, 600k yearly page visits). From 2016, N-A organised 10 competitions to reinvent 10 Functional Typologies. We adopted Design Competitions as a gamified research process and involved a Community Researching by Designing. Our mission is to influence and inform the production of innovative design concepts.

Working, Living, Dying Reinvented

Research By Design as a tool to question architectural paradigms
Challenging the design conventions to trigger design innovation in an innovative way

Type of project
  • Systemic changes

We consider ARCHITECTURE what has already been designed and/or built, conventional solutions repeated in a self-referential system. We imagine a counterpart, NON ARCHITECTURE: a world of unexplored designs and unlimited possibilities.
Architectural education builds habits in future designers, to act fast and take decisions in a short time. Non Architecture fights these habits, triggering innovation and in an innovative way.
Believing in Research By Design, we created a platform based on this approach and organised (2016-2019) 10 design competitions engaging other designers in a gamified process, allowing them to challenge their limits by giving them no limits.
For each competition we published a book, collecting the results with articles, illustrations and interviews from a call for materials. By creating a platform, relevant partnerships (UNStudio, Vitra, Ratti) and a growing community we want to influence, inform and share the production of innovative project concepts.
