Beyond Desakota

The possibility of a decentralized urbanism from the experience of Asian urbanization

Beyond Desakota

The possibility of a decentralized urbanism from the experience of Asian urbanization
An investigation about the alternative urbanism that might develop from advanced desakota, i.e., the mixed urban-rural land use areas of Asia.
File under
Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

If architecture has a tradition of proposing alternative cities with urban-rural characters, these showcased aesthetic potentials more than drive actual developments. Against this, the Asian mixed urban-rural areas are a tangible reality that offers an interplay of human and natural dynamics more flexible than that of any urban center or Western suburb. Anyway, local administrations often disregard them, the potential of which is under threat due to developing urban primacy, the adoption of Western planning models, and the governance challenges posed by the implementation of new infrastructure. In light of this, before it is too late, the project aims to document the more or less aware initiatives that concretely elaborate by social, technological, economic, or spatial ways on such peculiarity of Asian urbanization. Since this should hold large shares of future world urbanization, the impact of some awareness is key and may also offer hope after the urban failures of pandemic times.
