The Body as an Extension of the Dwelling

Spatially exploring homes of the elderly

The Body as an Extension of the Dwelling

Spatially exploring homes of the elderly
Artistic research project mapping interiors of the elderly through motion and video tracking in order to redesign transitions between body and dwelling

Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

The elderly population is increasing. Some choose to age in place while others move into a smaller home. In my work I focus on one building of identical small apartments designed for the elderly in Denmark. Here I will explore how several of the elderly inhabit the dwellings, and I will examine the individual challenges that each body meets in the space of everyday life. The point being to redesign the transitions between body and building for the future dwellings of the elderly, no matter where you are on the range of age, mobility or health. Through motion and video tracking I will map the movement and interaction in order to locate the challenges and document how the transitions between body and building are lacking. The transition findings will then be sculpted as architectural prosthetics filling the void. Using these abstract spatial sketches I will then finish with a design principle for a future caring and inclusive dwelling for the elderly.
