Community development and management model for urban common spaces - Jazdów Finnish Houses in Warsaw
Open space as a common space? How to empower communities in a bottom up city creation?
File under

Nowadays different bottom-up initiatives are a direct response to ineffectiveness of forms of administration and spatial planning. How, in this context, will future urbanism look like? What if citizens will take part of responsibilities for developing and maintaining of spaces?

In the project we show how self-managed communities are a way to bridge the gap between municipalities and citizens. Jazdów in Warsaw is a green colony of wooden Finnish houses, which despite the rich history, barely avoided being demolished. As a consequence of protest social consultations were held and Jazdów started to be a socio-cultural hub.

The project is an idea for management and sustainable design model for Jazdów, where decisions are made in bottom–up, interdisciplinary groups. This process is based on Open Design theory of general ‘frames’ creation, in which spontaneous, grass-roots development can be done, being a continuation of 'generative architechture' history of Jazdów landscape.

SOCIAL CONSULTATIONS

In September 2011 the Association of the Dwellers of the Finnish Houses in Jazdów issued a request for social consultations with regard to the settlement area signed by more than 2,000 people. The city council accepted that request and started the social consultations process aimed at creating the spatial plan for the Jazdów settlement.
