Brrum is an architecture practice founded by Cecilia Lundbäck, Ulrika Karlsson and Veronica Skeppe, based in Stockholm. We do architecture, public art and design projects of different scales, from landscapes to furniture. We see our physical environment as political, aesthetic, changeable and technological and enjoy challenging given understandings of materials, scales and sites. Daniel Garnbeck is a cabinet maker working in close collaboration with Brrum in several projects.

Storm Timber

on-site use of storm fallen timber

Storm Timber

on-site use of storm fallen timber
The project explores design and manufacturing methods for refining storm timber on site into public furniture.

Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

This project is a result of a natural catastrophe as starting point for a process of making and mending and proposes a method for on-site caretaking of storm timber. The table, stools and benches made on the island Särsö are all made from oak and pine trees that fell in the storm and now provide public furniture for the island.

After the storm piles of timber were gathered, a simple saw was raised and trunks were cut to planks on the same cliff they fell. Local raw material was machined, designed and put together on site; then placed, used and allowed to age in the same place it grew. The design meant making small incisions and cuts in the rough unbarked wood, to piece it together and give character and lightness to the thickness. The legs borrow silhouettes from local wooden house ornaments and end grain is painted white for the wood to dry slower and as reference to the white painted house corners and details.

The storm Alfrida ravaged Scandinavia on the night of 2 January 2019. Large amounts of trees fell - 500 000 m3 in the Stockholm archipelago only.

A structural joint was developed for the specific condition of working with green wood, made to gain stability and strength as the wood dries.
