Barcelona Medieval and Modern Wall Strategic Intervention Plan

Dealing with an urban absence

Barcelona Medieval and Modern Wall Strategic Intervention Plan

Dealing with an urban absence
The plan establishes stratgies to bring to surface the medieval wall, which is physically absent.
File under
Type of project
  • Site-specific cases

Although the medieval and modern walls are actually absent, they explain the urban form of Barcelona, and have marked a watershed moment in the city’s development and growth.
The proposal set forth relates to the concepts of presence and absence. No element of the city's heritage represents this duality better than its wall, a feature that offers a rich tapestry of urbanism, architecture and heritage that raises questions that this study aims to answer.
We define actions centred across 3 axes:
Program of Studies. Completing the partial knowledge currently available on the wall, both historically and physically.
Interpretation Program. Offering the public the tools they need to understand, enjoy and appreciate the wall understood as a unique heritage element.
Urban Integration Program. Defining the models for intervention and answering questions such as when the remains can be made visible, how to intervene to make them visible and what we are to do with the immaterial remains.
