Call for ideas 2021

Architectural Workers of Europe, Unite!

A call for labor solidarity, organizing, and action amongst architectural workers in Europe

Architectural Workers of Europe, Unite!

A call for labor solidarity, organizing, and action amongst architectural workers in Europe
A series of essays and interviews that casts architectural workers as allies in collective struggle
File under
Type of project
  • Systemic changes

How can architectural workers create landscapes of care for others whilst themselves mired in precarity? This project will challenge the Landscapes of Care call by arguing that designers, architects and urbanists, as well as their myriad administrative and technical colleagues, won’t be able to handle social and political issues in their projects without addressing how those same issues affect the conditions of their labor. These essays and interviews will canvass architectural workers within universities, cultural institutions and design firms, and as freelancers, across Europe. I will compile, compare, and chronicle their concerns, goals and visions for the future of architectural labor. Further, this project will animate peers to connect with each other as workers, develop political education campaigns, and formulate transnational demands. It will also call for solidarity with movements like the Architecture Lobby in the US and the UVW–Section of Architectural Workers in the UK.
