The School within The School

Implementing and imagining an alternative art school within its own walls

The School within The School

Implementing and imagining an alternative art school within its own walls
A series of programmed interventions that install the mechanisms of art school with student autonomy

Type of project
  • New alliances

Art academies have ideally sought to offer a sanctuary for both artistic and social experimentation but they are not immune to the pressures of capital and have too become subject to corporatisation. The School within The School asks what tools are required to imagine a future that has an alternative set of values. Using a series of programmed interventions such as: a student-run bar, radio station, performance platform and alternative entrance it installs the everyday mechanisms of the school with renewed possibility. The project is an example of how architecture can be speculative while having its feet still firmly on the ground. The position of the architect is to be both actor and participant, manipulating their direct environment alongside the community in order to both change and imagine beyond its current functioning.

The steps to... Are a performance platform that in their final form are cast out of concrete and can be transported around the school using their bespoke palette system. Often they hosted the spoken word evening "Words off the Page".

The Tap is a student run one-person-bar to be used at events or as an event in itself. It is tiled using the waste tiles that were being replaced around the school.

radiomushroom.org is a student run open radio station. The longest running part of The School within The School it acts both as a research tool and a platform for various initiatives.

The tour took place during the graduation festival at The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, 2019. This semi-fictional performance took you on a journey through the various functionings of The School within The School.

The website theschoolwithinthe.school acts as a base for the current activity of the institution.
